Nokia cannot remain silent after seeing the rise of the Android operating system as a threat. Hence, the Symbian^3 operating system is born and it is implemented into the Nokia C6-01, which is the phone that will be reviewed by us. The candybar touchscreen smartphone by Nokia has a powerful 8-megapixel camera, Web TV feature, social networking integration, supports both mobile Internet and WiFi.
The Nokia C6-01 has a simple exterior design. It has a single physical Menu button located at the below the screen, with two touch buttons (Answer and End) on the sides of the Menu button. The Micro-USB port, 3.5mm audio jack and Nokia proprietary charger plug is located at the bottom of the screen, while the camera key, volume rocker and the screen lock slider are located on the right of the device. The shining metal battery casing makes the phone look tough and elegant.
Display
The C6-01 has a 3.2-inch AMOLED screen with Nokia ClearBlack technology which makes reading possible even under the hot sun. It has a wide-screen (16:9) resolution of 640 x 320 pixels that is suitable for recording and viewing 720p HD video. In Symbian^3, users are given three homescreens to customize with widgets according to their taste.
In addition, the C6-01 comes with 8-megapixel camera. It has a built-in dual LED flash with a dedicated camera key. It is a good camera, but there is no macro mode for close shots. Recording 720p HD video is also possible via the C6-01 and the recorded video is beyond satisfactory level as it produces smooth video with clear colors. Users can also zoom in or out during the recording. Aside from performing video calling via the front-facing camera, the VGA camera can be used to snap portrait photos.
Social Network
Similar to HTC Friend Stream that integrates social networking sites at one widget, Nokia has its own Social Network widget which does the same. It supports popular social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and RenRen (China’s version of Facebook). Users can change the status or upload photos and share links from this application, instead of accessing into individual apps. To use the Social Network, simply place the widget on any of the three homesceens available.
GPS navigation
This Nokia smartphone is also a good travel companion as it is include Nokia Ovi Maps with GPS navigation. Ovi Maps gives the user to select either driving or walking modes. Furthermore, it added the Nokia Here and Now app that provide user the surrounding location’s point of interest such as restaurant, clinic, gas station and more.
Music player
Users are presented with the options to play music, listen to radio or browse music content in Ovi Music in the Music player. We are impressed with the loud and solid music that the C6-01 can produce. The Music player user interface has a fresh and attractive design, which allows user to find their desired songs by scrolling the album art left or right. Radio channels are supported when the headset is plugged in. alternatively, users can purchase new songs legally via the Ovi Music store.
QuickOffice
The C6-01 is also equipped with QuickOffice that allow users to read Word, Excel and PDF documents sans the editing function. However, users can choose to create a new document. There are other tools in the smartphone to assist in productivity such as Dictionary, Zip Manager, Recorder, Traveler, Notes and Calculator.
Web TV channels
Unlike China-made cellphones that are capable of hooking up to the local channels, the C6-01 offers access to several high quality international TV channels in Web TV. Leading global TV channels such as National Geographic, CNN and E! will be accessible from Web TV. The Web TV also supports YouTube and you can add more channels via the Ovi app. Keep in mind that streaming videos from the WebTV requires data access, so make sure you subscribe to an unlimited data plan unless you are planning to stream it via WiFi.
Message Reader
Message Reader is a cool feature for lazy readers or busy users. It reads English messages with the condition it is not written in abbreviations. Unfortunately, this feature could not be accessed directly from the Inbox, instead the user must start the app separately before it works.
